The Day Simeon Nikolov Shocked the World !!! Simeon “Moni” Nikolov is one of the most exciting young talents in world volleyball, and at just 19 years old, the Bulgarian setter is already playing with the confidence and personality of a veteran. Born on November 24, 2006, Nikolov stands 208 cm tall and combines exceptional size for a setter with athleticism, a powerful serve, outstanding court vision, and the ability to contribute as an attacker when his team needs him.

Nikolov comes from one of Bulgaria’s most famous volleyball families. His father, Vladimir Nikolov, is a legendary Bulgarian volleyball player, while his older brother Aleksandar Nikolov has also become one of the biggest stars of Bulgarian volleyball. Simeon has been developing at the highest level from a very young age, representing Bulgaria in junior competitions before becoming an important part of the senior national team.

His rise has been incredibly fast. After playing for Levski Sofia, Nikolov moved to the United States and played for Long Beach State, where he helped win the NCAA championship and received major individual honors. He then moved into professional volleyball with Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, continuing his development at the highest level.

But the 2026 Volleyball Nations League gave the world another opportunity to see just how special this young setter can be.

🇧🇬 BULGARIA vs ITALY 🇮🇹 — THE MATCH THAT SHOCKED EVERYONE

On June 24, 2026, Bulgaria faced Italy in Ljubljana in a match that immediately became one of the most memorable games of the VNL preliminary round.

Italy entered the match as the reigning World Champions and the world's No. 1 ranked team. Bulgaria, however, refused to be intimidated.

The result was an incredible five-set battle, with Bulgaria defeating Italy 3–2 by scores of 18–25, 25–20, 25–23, 19–25, 15–9. It was Bulgaria's first-ever VNL victory over Italy.

And right in the middle of this historic victory was Simeon Nikolov.

The 19-year-old setter wasn't simply responsible for running Bulgaria's offense. He became a genuine scoring threat himself, finishing the match with 9 points — 5 attacks, 1 block and 3 aces. His three aces were especially important, as his aggressive serving helped put enormous pressure on the Italian reception.

The third set was one of Nikolov's most memorable moments. With the match delicately balanced, Nikolov produced two consecutive aces, helping Bulgaria move ahead 18–15. Later, with Bulgaria fighting to close the set, he delivered the decisive point with a clever pallonetto, giving Bulgaria a 25–23 victory and a 2–1 lead.

That was the moment when the young setter showed that he wasn't afraid of the biggest stage.

Italy fought back brilliantly in the fourth set, winning 25–19 and forcing a deciding fifth set. But Bulgaria remained composed. In the tie-break, the Bulgarians took control early and never looked back, eventually winning 15–9 to complete a stunning upset.

Simeon Nikolov's performance was particularly impressive because his primary responsibility was not scoring points — it was creating opportunities for his teammates. He helped Bulgaria's attackers stay involved throughout the match while simultaneously becoming a dangerous offensive weapon himself. His combination of size, intelligence, serving power and confidence made him extremely difficult for Italy to deal with.
