In December of 2025, Munetaka Murakami signed with a Chicago White Sox team that had just lost 223 games in two seasons. I thought he made a mistake. MLB Trade Rumors had him at eight years and $180 million. He took two years and $34 million to go play for the worst team in baseball.
Nine months later he leads every rookie in MLB in home runs, leads all of Major League Baseball in isolated power, and the White Sox are in first place.
This is the full story. The Triple Crown at 22 in Japan, the youngest anyone has ever done it over there. The 56 home runs that broke a record Sadaharu Oh had held for 58 years. The high school coach in Kumamoto who watched pitchers stop throwing him strikes a decade before big league arms figured out the same thing. And the part almost nobody covers: the earthquake that tore through his hometown when he was sixteen, and the ten thousand yen he has sent to the castle restoration fund for every home run he has hit since he was nineteen.
We also go through the numbers honestly. A 42.1 percent whiff rate in the first percentile. A strikeout rate in the second. An expected batting average lower than what he is actually hitting, which means the average is real and no correction is coming. Adam Dunn put up a 138 OPS+ in Washington and a 54 in this exact uniform one year later. That is the warning, and it is a fair one.
