The Cubs answered in the fifth when Seiya Suzuki hit an RBI single to bring home Miguel Amaya, cutting the lead to 2-1. Chicago then seized the lead in the top of the sixth. Carson Kelly tied the game with a 410-foot solo blast to center field. Moments later, Ian Happ doubled to left field off Caleb Ferguson, driving in Michael Busch to give the Cubs a 3-2 edge. The lead was short-lived, however, as Cincinnati's JJ Bleday countered in the bottom of the frame with a 379-foot solo home run to tie the game at 3-3.
The decisive blow came in the top of the seventh inning. Following a leadoff walk by Suzuki, Alex Bregman broke out of a recent slump by launching a two-run homer down the left-field line off Julian Garcia, putting the Cubs ahead 5-3.
Chicago’s bullpen kept the Reds at bay for the remainder of the evening. Drew Pomeranz earned the win in relief. Trent Thornton was summoned with two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, forcing Sal Stewart into a game-ending groundout to secure his third save of the season. “Trent Thornton came in with two outs in the ninth and runners at the corners to get Sal Stewart to hit into a game-ending ground out for his third save.”
