The Cincinnati Bengals potentially shifting toward a more balanced split backfield could be an intriguing development for their offense, especially if they continue giving Samaje Perine more carries. While having a clear lead back has its advantages, distributing touches between multiple running backs could help keep the offense fresh, create different looks for opposing defenses, and reduce the physical toll on the backfield over the course of the season.

Perine brings a physical running style and experience as both a runner and a pass catcher. His ability to handle contact and contribute in multiple facets of the offense could make him a valuable complement to the Bengals' other backs. Giving him more opportunities on early downs, in short-yardage situations, and near the goal line could allow Cincinnati to take advantage of his strengths without requiring him to carry the entire workload.
A more balanced approach could also benefit the Bengals' overall offensive efficiency. By rotating backs, Cincinnati could keep its primary playmakers fresher for important stretches of games and late-season matchups. Different running styles can force defenses to adjust, potentially opening up opportunities in the passing game for Joe Burrow and his receivers. If Perine establishes himself as a reliable option, the coaching staff could gain more flexibility in how it approaches individual matchups and game situations.
There is also a case for expanding Perine's role based on his recent production. In 2025, he recorded 382 rushing yards on 84 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt, while scoring three rushing touchdowns. Through the first five games of 2026, he has carried the ball 27 times for 110 yards, including a productive 14-carry, 68-yard performance against Miami.
Ultimately, Cincinnati does not necessarily need to abandon Chase Brown as its primary playmaker to make this strategy work. Instead, a more deliberate rotation could give Perine a consistent workload while preserving Brown's explosiveness and receiving ability. If Perine continues producing when given opportunities, increasing his share of the carries could become a practical way to improve the offense's balance.
The key will be finding the right distribution of touches. A true 50-50 split may not be necessary, but giving Perine more regular opportunities could make the Bengals less predictable and better equipped to handle the demands of a long season.
