Dexter Lawrence has arguably been Cincinnati’s most impactful offseason acquisition. The former New York Giants star has brought the size, power and interior disruption the Bengals desperately needed. Through five games, he has recorded three sacks, and his ability to command double-teams creates opportunities for teammates. His standout performance against Jacksonville, which included a sack and three tackles, demonstrated how he can influence a game beyond the box score. Lawrence has justified the significant investment Cincinnati made to acquire him.

Jonathan Allen has quietly provided another experienced presence on the defensive line. He has registered two sacks and 16 quarterback pressures through five games, showing that he can contribute as a pass-rusher alongside Lawrence. Against Jacksonville, Allen generated five pressures and earned an 80.7 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus, leading Cincinnati’s defense in that performance. However, his overall season evaluation remains more mixed, particularly against the run. The bye offers an opportunity to refine his consistency and maximize the benefits of playing next to Lawrence.
Boye Mafe has arguably been the most impressive newcomer relative to expectations. Through five games, the edge rusher has recorded three sacks, 25 quarterback pressures and a forced fumble. His 82.0 overall PFF grade ranks 12th among qualified edge defenders, while his 77.1 pass-rush grade reflects his ability to trouble opposing quarterbacks. His speed and explosiveness complement Lawrence’s power inside, giving Cincinnati a more dangerous and balanced pass rush. Mafe’s production has made him one of the team’s most valuable offseason additions.
Cincinnati enters its Week 6 bye at 3–2, with encouraging signs that its defensive rebuild is working. Lawrence has transformed the interior, Mafe has supplied an explosive edge presence, and Allen has delivered useful pressure. The next challenge is sustaining that production while improving run defense and overall consistency. If all three remain effective, the Bengals have a legitimate foundation for a much-improved defense in the second half of the season.
