The 1976 New York City Marathon was supposed to be a matchup between the biggest stars of the sport—Olympic champion Frank Shorter and American record holder Bill Rodgers. The hopes of a close race dissipated with Rodgers taking the lead at halfway and defeating the field by over 3 minutes in a time of 2:10:10, the fastest marathon in the world that year.
Rodgers went on to a historic four-peat, winning the New York City Marathon from 1976 through 1979, while also winning Boston a total of four times from 1975 through 1980.
