A returner who slaps the ball down the line because the server drifted to one side has
managed to lose the point on the first ball, before a rally ever existed. That is what
makes the return the second most important shot in tennis. An unforced error there
costs you exactly as much as one at the end of a twelve shot rally, and it takes a
fraction of the time to produce.
The default on the return is the same as everywhere else on the baseline. Cross court,
unless you have a good reason to go down the line. What changes is where the reasons
come from, and on the return they are specific to the serve: their serve is weak,
their weakness sits on the down the line side, or they finish the motion over
adjusted and out of position.
Notice that those stack. One of them alone is thin. Two or three of them together is
what makes the extra risk and the extra running worth taking, and seeing open court is
not one of them. Open court is the thing that tempts you into skipping the reasons
altogether.
