Italy vs USA | Quarter Final Highlights | Men's VNL 2026. Italy 🇮🇹 vs. USA 🇺🇸 | Quarter Final | Men's Volleyball Nations League 2026
The United States delivered one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Men's Volleyball Nations League Finals by defeating reigning world champions Italy in straight sets, 3-0, to secure a place in the semifinals in Ningbo, China. Despite Italy entering the match as one of the tournament favorites, the Americans dominated with outstanding serving, disciplined defense, and efficient attacking to earn one of their most impressive victories of the season.
Final Score:
🇺🇸 USA 3-0 Italy 🇮🇹
25-22, 25-21, 25-21
From the opening serve, Team USA controlled the rhythm of the match. Their aggressive serving constantly pressured Italy's reception, preventing the Italians from running their fast offensive combinations. Although each set remained competitive, the Americans stayed calm during the crucial moments and consistently pulled away late in every set.
The biggest difference between the two teams came from the service line. The United States finished the match with an incredible 14 service aces compared to Italy's 5. The relentless serving pressure forced Italy into difficult situations throughout the match and allowed the American blockers and defenders to organize effectively behind the net.
Jake Hanes was the undisputed star of the match. The American opposite delivered one of the best performances of the VNL Finals, finishing with 21 points, including 13 kills, an incredible 6 service aces, and 2 blocks. His serving runs completely changed the momentum of multiple sets, while his powerful attacks consistently broke through the Italian defense.
Outside hitter Ethan Champlin also played a key role in the victory, contributing 10 points with 8 kills and 2 aces while providing stability in serve reception and transition offense.
The American middle blockers quietly made a significant impact as well. Taylor Averill contributed 5 points with 4 kills and an ace, while Merrick McHenry added a block and Jeff Jendryk provided solid net defense. Veteran libero Erik Shoji anchored the backcourt with excellent passing and defensive coverage, recording 6 digs and allowing the USA offense to remain balanced throughout the match.
Statistically, the match was closer than the final score suggested. USA finished with 39 kills compared to Italy's 38, while Italy slightly edged the blocking battle 4-3. However, the overwhelming advantage in serving, where the Americans recorded 14 aces to Italy's 5, ultimately proved to be the deciding factor.
Italy struggled to establish its normally explosive offense due to constant pressure on serve receive. Their quick middle attack rarely found its rhythm, and despite remaining competitive in every set, the reigning world champions were unable to overcome the relentless American serving and disciplined defensive system.
The victory also served as revenge for the United States after losing to Italy during the preliminary round of the Volleyball Nations League. More importantly, it secured a place in the VNL semifinals, where the Americans would face undefeated Japan in one of the tournament's most anticipated matches.
Overall, the United States produced one of its finest performances of the 2026 Men's Volleyball Nations League, sweeping Italy 3-0 behind a dominant serving display, exceptional teamwork, and a spectacular individual performance from Jake Hanes. It was a statement victory that demonstrated the Americans' championship potential and ended Italy's hopes of winning the 2026 VNL title.
