The Golden State Valkyries are on the board in the WNBA Finals. After trailing for nearly all of Game 1, Golden State mounted a late comeback to beat the Atlanta Dream 68 64 at Chase Center and take a 1 0 lead in the best of seven series, the first Finals series in franchise history.
Gabby Williams led all scorers with 26 points, including a historic 16 in the second quarter that pulled the Valkyries back into the game after Atlanta controlled the early action. Williams joined Seimone Augustus, Angel McCoughtry, Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Jackie Young as the only players to score 15 or more points in a Finals quarter. She scored eight of Golden State's final nine points, including all six free throws she attempted, with two at the four second mark sealing the win.
Kiah Stokes added nine points, seven rebounds, and four blocks, while Kaila Charles had seven points and 10 rebounds. Stokes and Charles came up with crucial rebounds of Atlanta's missed threes down the stretch. Laeticia Amihere also made a big impact in 14 minutes, helping Golden State slow Angel Reese with five points and five rebounds. Allisha Gray returned to lead Atlanta with 19 points, and Reese finished with 14.
Game 2 tips off at 5 p.m. Monday at Chase Center.
