Double Olympic silver medallist and former world champion cyclist Becky North joins Sam Warburton for an episode of Open Gym at SW7 Academy, sharing how her relationship with training has evolved from elite sport to life as a working mum of two.
Formerly known as Becky James, Becky competed for Great Britain in track cycling and won two silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, following an extraordinary career that also saw her become world champion in both the sprint and keirin. In this episode, she reflects on the training, discipline and sacrifice required to compete at the highest level, as well as the experiences that shaped her during her time in elite sport.
Becky’s life and priorities now look very different. As a mum of two boys, she discusses returning to exercise after having children, balancing fitness with work and family life, and learning to train in a way that is effective, realistic and sustainable. Her goal is no longer to prepare for an Olympic final, but strength, confidence, health and feeling like herself.
That experience inspired Becky to create 30 Minute Strong, her female strength programme on the SW7 Academy app. Built around efficient 30-minute workouts, the programme is designed for busy women who want the structure of elite training principles without needing to organise their lives around the gym.
While training together, Becky and Sam explore the transition out of elite sport, the changing meaning of performance and why training still matters - even when the podium is no longer the goal.
Open Gym brings together real training and honest conversations with people who have performed at the highest level. .
