The Miami Heat may have just been handed one of the biggest low-risk opportunities of the offseason after Jonathan Isaac was surprisingly waived by the Orlando Magic. While injuries have unfortunately limited his career, there’s no denying the impact he can make when healthy.
At 6-foot-10 with elite length, Isaac has built a reputation as one of the NBA’s most versatile defenders. He can guard point guards, wings, forwards, and even smaller centers, giving Erik Spoelstra another defensive chess piece to deploy in different lineups.
Miami has been searching for more size, athleticism, and defensive versatility behind Bam Adebayo. Isaac checks every one of those boxes.
If signed to a veteran minimum contract, the Heat would be taking almost no financial risk while potentially adding one of the league’s better defensive specialists.
Imagine lineups featuring:
* Bam Adebayo
* Jonathan Isaac
* Andrew Wiggins
* Davion Mitchell
That would immediately become one of the toughest defensive units in basketball.
Offensively, Isaac isn’t expected to be a primary scorer, but he doesn’t need to be. His value comes from:
* Defensive versatility
* Rim protection
* Rebounding
* Length
* Shot contesting
* Transition finishing
The biggest concern, of course, remains durability. Isaac has battled injuries throughout most of his NBA career, which is ultimately why Orlando decided to move on and create additional cap flexibility. However, if Miami believes it can manage his workload and keep him healthy, this could become one of the biggest bargain signings of free agency.
For the Heat, this is exactly the type of move Pat Riley has built his reputation on—finding talented players whose value has dipped and putting them in a system where they can thrive.
If Jonathan Isaac can stay on the floor, he could become an important rotational piece for a Miami team looking to add more length, defense, and frontcourt depth heading into next season.
