Former Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto shared his thoughts on MLB’s performance-enhancing drug era during an appearance on MLB Now this week, saying he believes Hall of Fame discussions should be more nuanced.
Votto said PED use was “the zeitgeist” of baseball during that era and questioned how anyone can accurately determine who should or shouldn’t be excluded from the Hall of Fame.
“If you say it was cheating, what percentage of the league was cheating? Was it 10% or was it 90%? And if you say it was cheating, have we omitted guys who have slipped through the cracks?” Votto said.
He added: “We have to presume everybody during that era either didn’t, blanket, or did, blanket, because we didn’t have the things to measure it accurately… I would like to see a more nuanced conversation about this long term.”
Votto’s comments came ahead of his debut this weekend as an on-field analyst for NBC’s Sunday Night Baseball.
