The Warriors have plenty of questions this season, and one of the biggest is whether a 24-year-old rookie can handle playing alongside Steph Curry in the final chapter of his career. Four preseason games in, Yaxel Lendeborg already reads the floor like a veteran.
The best way to evaluate him is to watch how he fits into the intricate web of movement and passing that makes the Warriors offense what it is. We break down the Princeton action and pinch post entries where he reads the switch, the flare screen and the empty lane all before he cuts. The backdoor he explodes into when his new defender gets chest to chest with him. The pin down for Curry that turns into a curl and a back screen at the weakside elbow, where nobody wants to leave Steph and that is all Lendeborg needs.
We also get into how he leverages Curry's gravity, the screen that forces the center up and creates the long closeout, and the gallop he adds before the catch that younger players almost always get wrong. Plus split action out of the corner, the footwork and the left-handed finish over an elite rim protector, and what it looks like when he plays center in the small-ball lineups the Warriors used to run with Draymond.
Steve Kerr on why he's the most prepared rookie he's had, and why a guy who spent two years in junior college in Yuma was never a five-star anything.
