Bob McAdoo's Forgotten Celtics Trade: Bob Ryan Explains How Red Treated Him 😳

Bob Ryan and Gary Tanguay on the Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman Podcast: Bob McAdoo, the three-time scoring champion who became a forgotten man. Ryan on McAdoo's role off the bench for the 1982 champion Lakers, and the Celtics chapter he calls "so unfair": the trade, arriving in San Antonio to an empty hotel lobby, Dave Cowens benching himself to start him, and the free-agent compensation that sent him to Detroit.

The trade chain (Basketball-Reference): On Sept. 6, 1979, Boston sent McAdoo to Detroit as compensation for signing M.L. Carr and received two 1980 first-round picks, Nos. 1 and 13. On June 9, 1980, the Celtics sent those picks to Golden State for Robert Parish and the No. 3 pick, which became Kevin McHale.
