The Day Yuji Nishida, Ran Takahashi & Yuki Ishikawa Shocked the World !!! Japan delivered one of their finest performances of the 2026 Men's Volleyball Nations League by defeating Italy 3-2 in an unforgettable five-set battle in Osaka. The victory extended Japan's unbeaten run to 9-0, keeping them at the top of the VNL standings and further establishing them as one of the favourites to win the tournament. In front of an electric home crowd, Japan combined relentless defence, fast offence and clutch performances from their star trio of Ran Takahashi, Yuji Nishida and Yuki Ishikawa to overcome the reigning world champions.

Japan defeated Italy 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12).

Italy claimed the opening set 26-24 after surviving several long rallies, but Japan immediately answered with a dominant second set thanks to much more aggressive serving and transition play. The hosts continued their momentum by controlling the third set with outstanding attacking efficiency and spectacular floor defence. Italy responded in the fourth set behind captain Simone Giannelli, forcing a deciding fifth set. In the tiebreak, Japan remained composed under pressure, using their defence and serving to create scoring opportunities before Ran Takahashi finished the match with the winning spike.

Ran Takahashi was the biggest star of the match, finishing with a match-high 26 points, including two aces and one block. Beyond his scoring, he delivered excellent passing throughout the match, played a huge role in Japan's defensive system, and consistently converted difficult transition attacks. His most memorable moment came in the fifth set when he scored the match-winning point to complete another dramatic victory for Japan.

Yuji Nishida once again proved why he is one of the world's most exciting opposites. Nishida finished with 20 points while attacking at an outstanding 66% efficiency against one of the strongest blocking teams in international volleyball. His explosive vertical jump and incredibly fast arm swing allowed him to beat Italy's tall blockers repeatedly. Nishida also served aggressively throughout the match, constantly putting pressure on Italy's reception, and scored several crucial points during the second, third and fifth sets when Japan needed him the most.

Captain Yuki Ishikawa contributed another complete all-around performance with 17 points, including two service aces. While Takahashi and Nishida provided much of the offensive firepower, Ishikawa controlled the rhythm of Japan's game with outstanding reception, leadership and composure. He repeatedly scored difficult high-ball attacks in pressure situations and remained one of Japan's most reliable players from the first point to the last. After the match, Ishikawa credited Japan's defence and serving as the keys to the victory.

Japan's success came from several important factors. Their outstanding floor defence extended countless rallies, while aggressive serving consistently disrupted Italy's offensive rhythm. Setter Masaki Oya distributed the ball brilliantly, allowing Japan's fast offence to keep Italy's blockers guessing throughout the match. The combination of Takahashi, Nishida and Ishikawa produced 63 points, making them nearly unstoppable for long stretches of the contest.

Italy also produced an excellent performance despite the defeat. Alessandro Bovolenta led the Italians with 14 points, followed by Daniele Lavia with 13, Mattia Bottolo with 12, while Giovanni Sanguinetti and Luca Porro each added 11 points. Captain Simone Giannelli made his first appearance of the 2026 VNL and once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the world's best setters by leading Italy's offence and helping his team push the match to five sets.

This thrilling victory over Italy was arguably one of Japan's best performances of the 2026 Men's Volleyball Nations League. Led by Ran Takahashi's 26 points, Yuji Nishida's 20 points and Yuki Ishikawa's 17 points, Japan showcased the speed, discipline and determination that have made them one of the strongest teams in the world. Remaining undefeated at 9-0, Japan strengthened their position as one of the leading contenders for the 2026 VNL championship.
