It wasn't the prettiest of games, but all that matters for the New York Mets is that it was a 12-6 victory that keeps the Mets in front with eight games to play.

Brandon Sproat got the start for New York and looked solid over the first two innings, but it was a 3rd inning littered with defensive lapses that allowed the Nationals to open up a 4-1 lead.

Offensively, the Mets responded in a big way in the 4th. After some defensive issues for the Nationals, Francisco Alvarez tied the game with an RBI double. Francisco Lindor put the Mets in front with a single and then Juan Soto blew the game open with a three-run homer, a career high 42nd homer for Soto.

With the win, the Mets stay in front of those chasing them down for the final wild card spot in the National League now with just eight games remaining on the schedule. Nolan McLean will go for the Mets tomorrow as they look to lock up the series W.
