How far should I be hitting my driver?
What should I be shooting after six months?
Shouldn't I be better by now?
Donna hears these questions ALL the time. And sometimes, golfers don't even have to ask. You can see it happening on the range—the sideways glances, watching what everyone else is doing, comparing distances, swings and scores, and quietly wondering, "Why am I not there yet?"
Here's the problem: comparison might be the fastest way to lose the joy of golf.
Golf is one of the most personal sports there is. Every golfer comes into the game with a different athletic background, body, schedule, amount of practice time, life experience, goals and challenges. So why do we think we should all progress at the same rate?
In this episode, Donna and Boo dig into why golfers compare themselves, why there is NO universal golf timeline, and why success in this game has to be personal.
In This Episode:
• Why comparison can destroy confidence and take the fun out of golf
• Please stop asking, "How far SHOULD I hit it?"
• Why distance is overrated—and longer doesn't automatically mean better
• The myth of the golf timeline: there is no point where you "should" be after six months, one year or five years
• Why every golfer needs to define success for themselves
• The part nobody talks about: everyone is carrying something
• How work, family, stress, health and life affect your golf
• Why sometimes simply making the tee time IS the victory
• The most dangerous golfer: the one trying to impress everyone
• Stories and lessons from Donna's decades of teaching golfers
• Why progress in golf is rarely a straight line
• How your definition of success will change throughout your golf journey
• Why confidence—not comparison—is what keeps us coming back
Your golf journey is going to ebb and flow.
There will be stretches when everything clicks and stretches when it feels like you've gone backward.
Your goals will change.
Your body will change.
Your life will change.
And so will your golf.
Wherever you are right now is part of YOUR journey.
If this episode reminded you to stop comparing yourself, send it to another golfer who needs to hear it. Chances are, they've wondered whether they're good enough, too.
Maybe today they'll realize they already are.
Comparison steals confidence. Progress builds confidence. And confidence is what keeps us coming back to this amazing game.
As always, have fun and go low!
