Episode Notes

Carter Davis drilled a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 left after Carson Beck drove the offense 46 yards on 9 plays, Rueben Bain Jr. and the defense made some huge plays, and the 10th-ranked Miami Hurricanes hung on to beat the #6 Notre dame Fightin’ Irish 27-24 in the season opener for both teams at Hard Rock Stadium.

Christian Gray’s pass interference penalty gave the ‘Canes the ball deep in Irish territory after the Miami offense hadn’t picked up a 1st down in 4 straight drives following 2 picture-perfect scoring drives in the 2nd and 3rd quarters that gave them a 21-7 lead and what looked like an easy path to the win.

QB CJ Carr’s 7-yard touchdown run tied the game at 24 with 3:21 left for Notre Dame, as the Irish offense came alive in the 2nd half.

Noah Burnett had kicked a 39-yard field goal to bring the Irish within 24-17 with 6:12 left.

Prior to that drive, Bain Jr., Miami’s All-American Defensive End, intercepted CJ Carr & returned it 12 yards to set up Carter Davis’ 38-yard field goal that gave the ‘Canes a 24-14 lead with 9:42 left. The interception- the 1st of the game thrown by either QB- came Miami offense 3 straight 3 & outs in the 3rd & 4th quarters.

Notre Dame scored a touchdown to start the 4th quarter, capping an 11-play, 64-yard drive that was assisted by 2 questionable penalty calls on the Miami defense.

Beck- the celebrated senior transfer from Georgia-  led the Hurricanes offense on back-2-back touchdown drives that took up more than 13:00 of game-time. The 1st one ended the 1st half and the other opened up the 2nd half.

Beck capped the with a beautiful 20-yard TD pass off his back foot to CJ Daniels, who made an amazing 1-handed catch falling into the end zone. It was Beck’s 2nd TD pas of the game.

Transfer CharMar “Marty” Brown ran it in from 5 yards out to finish off a 12-play, 75-yards drive to start the 3rd quarter.

Beck was 8 for 8 on the 2 drives, the start of a stretch that saw him complete 12 straight passes.

Miami took the 7-0 lead when Beck tossed his 1st touchdown pass as a Hurricane to freshman WR Malachi Toney with 14:03 left in the 2nd quarter.

Beck threw for 205 yards and 2 touchdowns in his Miami debut. Toney caught 6 passes for 82 yards and the touchdown. Daniels hauled in 5 balls for 46 yards and the score. Mark Fletcher Jr. ran for 66 yards on 15 carries. Brown ran it 15 times for 54 yards and a score. Akheem Mesidore led the defense with 5 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Bain added 6 tackles, a sack and the interception.
