Yesterday in Sports recaps a packed Thursday across the NFL, MLB playoffs, WNBA postseason, international soccer, NBA and NHL, beginning with a dramatic AFC North finish in Cleveland.
Chris Horwedel breaks down Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard game-winning field goal as the Browns beat Pittsburgh 27-24 and improve to 3-1. Cleveland’s defense sacks Aaron Rodgers five times and forces three turnovers in a game that swings repeatedly in the fourth quarter.
In Major League Baseball, Atlanta eliminates Philadelphia with a 6-2 win in the deciding Wild Card Game 3. Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson homer, while Chris Sale closes out Atlanta’s first winner-take-all postseason victory since 1996 and sends the Braves on to face the Dodgers.
The WNBA playoffs feature another huge performance from A’ja Wilson, who scores 36 points as Las Vegas eliminates Indiana and reaches the semifinals for an eighth straight season. Atlanta’s Angel Reese is also named Defensive Player of the Year after a record-setting season on the glass.
Portugal responds to Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from national-team camp by beating Denmark 4-2, while questions remain about whether Ronaldo will return. Germany earns its first victory under Jürgen Klopp, and the Netherlands, Wales and Ireland are also in Nations League action.
Elsewhere, Toronto extends Jamal Shead, Anaheim and Buffalo make long-term commitments to young defensemen, and the NHL delivers an explosive opening week highlighted by Igor Shesterkin becoming the first goalie to score in Rangers history. The episode closes with NFL injury updates involving Travis Etienne and Jayden Daniels.
