Welcome to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones.
In episode 58, I’m joined by former Wigan Athletic captain Emmerson Boyce.
Best remembered for lifting the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013 after one of the greatest shocks in Wembley history, Emmerson tells the story of his career from Luton Town and Crystal Palace to becoming a Wigan legend.
We discuss how he first got into football, his move north to Wigan, what made the club feel like a family, and why Dave Whelan played such a big role in his career both during and after football.
Emmerson also gives brilliant insight into working under Paul Jewell, Steve Bruce and Roberto Martinez — including the moment Martinez told Wigan he wanted them to play like Arsenal and Barcelona.
Of course, we also talk in depth about the 2013 FA Cup final against Manchester City, Ben Watson’s winning goal, walking up the Wembley steps, lifting the trophy, and why he wouldn’t swap that cup win for Premier League survival.
There’s also discussion on Barbados, representing the national team, paying for his own travel to play international football, working as technical director, women’s football, Wigan Athletic Women, and his hopes for the future.
Thanks so much for the continued support, and I hope this instalment of your soon-to-be favourite football podcast continues to impress.
