Daily DLP: Lions Week 8 film notes, Jack Campbell update and more Detroit Lions Podcast

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell is recovering with full lower-body mobility, and the priority is his long-term health rather than any return-to-play timeline. He is still working on his upper body per his own statement. As Jeff Risdon emphasized, Detroit will support him without pressing for specifics. Head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes have fostered the team-first locker room rallying around him.
Is Jack Campbell on track for a healthy recovery?
Yes, Jack Campbell reported full mobility in his lower body and is focusing on upper-body recovery. Football is not the focus, his overall health is. As Jeff Risdon noted, the statement effectively rules out paralysis concerns and centers on Campbell living a normal post-football life, whenever that begins.
What exactly changed in the Detroit Lions run game?
Detroit pivoted from early outside-zone looks to more power and counters out of 12 personnel with a tight end in the backfield. That switch neutralized defensive line stunts and let tight ends handle fast-flow linebackers.
Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing leaned into offset and sidecar formations and used motion to tip coverage keys so Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff could attack accordingly. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright sealed the second level in the second half, and Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell and Blake Miller were strong at the point of attack. As Jeff Risdon detailed on film review, Wright’s second half was outstanding on the edge and the concepts produced cleaner lanes even in a 19-point outing.
Who earned top marks in the latest PFN metrics?
Cornerback DJ Reed graded at the top of Pro Football Network’s weekly Impact Score for cornerbacks in Week 8 with three pass breakups and an interception. Jeff Risdon added that Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams ranked No. 12 among wide receivers for the week and Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown ranked No. 15. The bond between Jared Goff and Jameson Williams shone through in the recent mic’d-up segment, reinforcing the on-field chemistry behind those notes.
What is the latest on injuries and the trade deadline?
Detroit Lions safety Kirby Joseph is limited with a knee and is over a week into his 21-day return-to-practice window. The team is testing his workload and does not expect activation this week. Jack Campbell did not practice. Gordon Ogbongbemiga is limited with a toe. Detroit added speed with linebacker Owen Papo on the practice squad, a special-teams-first piece with rare athletic traits.
At linebacker, Jeff Risdon pointed to Derek Barnes as a logical option to assume more MIKE duties, with Trevor Nowaski better suited to SAM. With the trade deadline five days away, Risdon expects fit-over-flash: a depth-caliber addition rather than a splash. The approach aligns with Detroit’s emphasis on culture and role clarity under Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes.
