Daily DLP: Lions Bye Week Stat and PFF Grade Check - Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions are a real contender because they pair the NFL’s No. 1 offense with a league-leading pass rush and the NFL’s best tackling, leaving third-down defense and coverage communication as the focus areas. At 3-2 and trending up, Detroit’s path is clear, defined by data and fixable issues.
Are the Detroit Lions actually a contender through five weeks?
Yes, the data backs it up. Detroit owns the No. 1 overall team grade through Week 5 and sits 3-2 heading into the bye. As Jeff Risdon noted, the volatility of small samples is real, highlighted by opponent passer rating allowed jumping from 31st to 26th in a single weekend, but the underlying strengths hold.
Detroit’s offense is first in scoring at 32.8 points per game and third in points per play. The overall talent base shows up consistently, and the Lions have already corrected some back-seven communication in the most recent game. The mission now is eliminating outlier clunkers, not finding a new identity.
How strong are quarterback Jared Goff and the pass game protection?
Elite and efficient. Detroit ranks second in passing and third in pass blocking by the grading service reviewed.
Quarterback Jared Goff, Detroit Lions, has been protected at a top-tier level, with a 5.45 percent sack rate on his dropbacks. Across the line, guard Christian Mahogany, Detroit Lions, grades well in pass pro despite a few early-season miscues, and right tackle Blake Miller, Detroit Lions, is the lone starter outside the top tier at his spot, sitting 30th. Detroit is eighth in receiving, first on third down offensively, and fourth in red zone offense. The production matches: 393.8 yards per game on offense and ninth in yards per pass, with a completion rate of 67.02 percent.
What does the defense do at an elite level, and where is it breaking?
The pass rush and tackling are elite, while third downs and explosive passes allowed are the problems. Detroit ranks third in pass rush grade, leads the NFL in sacks, and leads the NFL in quick pressure rate. The Lions are also No. 1 in tackling at 88.5, with the next-best team at 77.
Risdon flagged the contrast: overall defense grades around 13th, run defense 16th, but coverage sits 22nd with too many miscommunications. Opponents throw 64.9 percent of the time and attempt 42.6 passes per game against Detroit, driving the Lions to 32nd in passing yards allowed and 29.6 points allowed per game. Third-down defense is 30th and fourth-down defense has allowed 87.5 percent. Encouragingly, coordination between safeties and linebackers looked much better in the Arizona game, and safety Keith Abney, Detroit Lions, provided a lift.
What must change during the bye to unlock a playoff ceiling?
Win third downs and tighten coverage rules. That is the lever. As Jeff Risdon emphasized, fixing the third-and-medium window on offense and eliminating coverage busts on defense flips the margin quickly.
Special teams need cleaner return blocking and vision. Detroit ranks 21st on special teams, with coverage solid but returns lagging. Wide receiver Tay Martin, Detroit Lions, has been a bright spot in coverage and looks like a legitimate special teams honors candidate, while the loss of wide receiver Tom Kennedy, Detroit Lions, has hurt return consistency. Clean up these details, keep the pass rush cooking, and the Lions’ strengths will carry January football.
