#418 Season-Ready: Best Practices that Matter for High School Officials

In this episode, Paul delivers a comprehensive in-season talk to 60 high school basketball officials across Massachusetts, presented under the leadership and tutelage of Joe Bird, who oversees more than 200 officials from multiple IAABO boards including the Tri-Valley League, Bay State Conference (MIAA), and the Independent School League (ISL)—widely regarded as one of the top girls’ high school basketball leagues in the country. This session was designed to provide practical, immediately applicable tools for officials navigating the intensity of the high school season.

The talk focuses on pregame preparation, strong partnering habits, captain and coach communication, signaling clarity, and game management under pressure. Paul emphasizes controlling what you can control, being the partner everyone wants to work with, establishing communication standards early, and using proactive tools to manage temperature and protect the game. This episode serves as a blueprint for officials looking to sharpen their professionalism, confidence, and presence on the floor—while reinforcing the mindset, discipline, and teamwork required to consistently serve the game at a high level.
