Episode Notes

Jack Jones intercepted Marcus Mariotta on the 1st play of overtime, De’Von Achane ran the ball into field goal range, and Riley Patterson’s 29-yard field goal gave the Miami Dolphins a hard-fought 16-13 OT win over the Washington Commanders in the first ever NFL regular-season game in Spain, played at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The ‘W’ is Miami’s 2nd straight win and their 3rd in the last 4 games, improving their record to 4-7 heading into their bye week with back-to-back games against the Saints and Jets, a pair of 2-8 teams. (prior to Sunday’s action)

The Commanders (3-8) had a chance to win with :15 left in regulation, but Matt Gay missed his 2nd field goal of the day, both from 50+ yards out.

The Dolphins got stopped on 4th-and-goal twice in the game, inside the final 2:00 after getting the ball in Commanders’ territory after a muffed punt that came after Miami stopped Washington on 4th-and-goal but couldn’t move downfield on the ensuing offensive possession.

For the 2nd week in a row and for the 4th time in as many Miami wins, it was Achane and the running game that paved the way to victory for the Dolphins.

Achane had another big game, rushing for 120 yards on 21 attempts, plus 5 catches for 45 yards through the air. Ollie Gordon added 45 yards on 9 carries to back up Achane.

Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa was just 14 for 20 for 171 yards and no touchdowns- but he did not throw an interception. Tua led the league with 12 picks heading into the game.

After both teams held each other to a pair of field goals each in the 1st half, the Commanders scored the game’s 1st touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Mariotta to Deebo Samuel.

The Dolphins then drove down to the Commanders 2-yard line, but failed to score when LB Bobby Wagner dove and knocked the ball away from Jaylen Waddle on 4th down.

Miami’s defense got a stop then drove down the field again, but this time Gordon scored from a yard out to tie it at 13.

Washington then drove down to the 1-yard line- aided by a huge 43-yard Mariotta run in 3rd & 8- but TE Zach Ertz slipped and they missed on 4th and goal.

The Dolphins were held on the next drive, but Ethan Bonner recovered the muffed punt at the Commanders 42 with 4:00 left.

Achane’s 18-yards scamper gave Miami a 1st and goal, but they couldn’t get in from the 1 on 3rd down. Mike McDaniel went for it on 4th down, but Gordon was stuffed by the Washington defense.

The Commanders took the ball with 1:41 left in the game at their own 3, and Mariota led the team into field goal range, but Gay missed the likely game-winning kick.

From there it went to OT, Jones made the pick, Achane ran it 3 times for 22 yards, and Patterson drilled the game-winner for Miami, his 3rd FG of the game.

LB Jordyn Brooks continued his stellar play for the Dolphins’ defense with a season-high 20 tackles- 10 solo.
