Anastas: Chalk Talk #1 – What Does a Hockey Coach Really Look For?

Most fans watch the puck. Coaches watch patterns, habits, and the small decisions that quietly decide who wins. That’s the heartbeat of our new monthly series, Anastas Chalk Talk, where we sit down with Chicago Wolves head coach, Spiros Anastas, to unpack the parts of hockey you don’t get from highlights, point totals, or a quick glance at plus-minus.

We start with what’s happening on the ice right now in Chicago: the Wolves’ early stumble, the grit it takes to reset after an 0-4 start, and how roster movement tied to the Carolina Hurricanes shapes roles and opportunity. From there, Spiros lays out his coaching philosophy in plain terms, including the “habits” he tracks every day and his three “accelerators,” those first three steps after a change of possession, with the puck, and at the blue lines that tell you instantly whether a player is dialed in.

Then we go deeper into player development and NHL readiness: how call-up conversations actually work, why video is the No 1 teaching tool, and how individualized development keys, role fit, and context matter as much as production. We also tackle hockey IQ and the viral Nikita Kucherov “dumber” quote, exploring why today’s speed and systems can feel predictable and what that means for creativity. To wrap, Spiros shares what earns his trust late in games, how line matching really happens, and one defensive-zone detail fans can track next time they watch: the Wolves’ “kill box” approach to killing plays quickly.
