Maureen Hirt on Unranked to National Champions (EP446)

Maureen Hirt, head coach of the 2026 NCAA Division III National Champion Denison University women’s basketball team, joined the Basketball Podcast to discuss one of the most remarkable championship runs in college basketball history. Hirt shares how Denison became the first unranked team to win a Division III national title, built on a process-driven culture, shared leadership, and player ownership.

Hirt breaks down the program’s unique committee-based leadership model, why they moved away from captains, and how communication and daily connection shape their culture. She also discusses Denison’s 4-out, 1-in dribble drive offense, the use of small-sided games, and how they teach decision-making, spacing, and efficient shot selection through data-driven player development.

The conversation also explores recruiting at a high-academic Division III institution, the evolution of Hirt’s coaching philosophy, and her personal battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma during her early years at Denison. It’s a powerful discussion on resilience, leadership, and building a championship program centered on people first.
