BYU, Utah FINALLY Forcing National Media to Respect Big 12 | College Football Kickoff

For decades, the Holy War between Utah and BYU was anchored purely by state geography, institutional identity, and bad blood. But inside a realigned Big 12, this week’s clash in Salt Lake City has exploded into the single most important game on the conference calendar—and a defining moment for the Big 12’s national reputation.

For the first time in the rivalry’s 100-plus year history, both programs enter the matchup ranked inside the national top ten. Unbeaten third-ranked Utah sits atop the league standings, commanding the nation's longest active winning streak. Ninth-ranked BYU trails by just one game, desperate to keep its conference title bid alive while protecting its razor-thin margin for error in the playoff race. With both schools competing under the same league banner, this isn't just about controlling the Beehive State—it is a functional elimination game for a first-round postseason bye in Arlington.

Beyond the standings, the Holy War carries massive optics for Commissioner Brett Yormark’s conference. As the College Football Playoff committee continues to scrutinize the Big 12’s depth, a top-ten showdown on a national stage provides the league with its highest-profile showcase of elite physical football. The game offers the winner a resume-defining crown jewel that the committee simply cannot minimize.

In a modern college football environment where realigned rivalries sometimes lose their edge, BYU versus Utah has done the exact opposite. With championship positioning, playoff survival, and league prestige hanging in the balance, the Holy War isn't just a rivalry anymore—it is the pulse of the Big 12.
