Ep 2008 Are You Giving Kids A Role, Or Just A Number?

https://teachhoops.com/

Second week of December, a kid knocks on the office door, sits down, and says he thought he was going to start. Most of us have lived that exact moment. And the hard truth is he usually has every reason to believe it, because nobody ever sat him down and told him anything else.

This episode takes the role conversation and runs it through a modern lens. Simplicity wins. If your role talk needs a whiteboard and eleven minutes, the kid is not listening, he is waiting to find out if he is starting. One sentence. What is your job on this team?

Coach Collins breaks down why silence functions as a promise, why every player writes himself a bigger role than the one you had in mind, and why defining a kid by a position number is coaching from thirty years ago. The job is not what he is. The job is what he decides when the ball moves.

What we cover:

Silence as a promise, and how a quiet October turns into a hurt player in December

Simplicity wins: saying the role in one sentence, in his language

The canyon between calling somebody your eighth man and telling him he takes their best scorer for six minutes

Defining roles by decisions instead of positions, so a player knows what to do the moment the ball moves

Why minutes are the reward and the decision is the actual job

Scaffolding the role so a sophomore gets the version he can hold right now, mastering one decision before you add the next

Telling him exactly what earns more, with measurable standards instead of empty advice like work harder

Why your best player gets the vaguest coaching in the gym, and why he needs a defined job too

Reinforcing it every two weeks in thirty second hallway check ins, because roles drift when kids get hot, get hurt, or start hearing it from the bleachers

The surprise: the kids you are most scared to talk to are almost always the most relieved to hear it

Clarity is a kindness, and ambiguity is what actually breaks trust

Your challenge: before your first practice, write one sentence for every player describing his job. If you cannot write it, you do not know it. And if you do not know it, there is no chance he does.
