INFIELD NIGHTMARE: Why the Boston Red Sox Infield COULD Collapse in 2026

Boston Red Sox face a make-or-break year as questions swirl around their infield depth and durability heading into 2026. Can Willson Contreras provide the power surge and emotional leadership the lineup needs, or will his defensive question marks at first base haunt the team? Marcelo Mayer steps into second base with high-ceiling potential, but concerns about health and inexperience cast doubt on his consistency. Trevor Story’s elite defense and speed ignite hope, yet his injury history and streaky bat remain a pressing concern for Boston’s postseason ambitions.

Gabby (Hurlbut) Maljanian breaks down how Caleb Durbin’s contact skills and speed could spark the offense, but his lack of power and arm strength at third base raise red flags. The podcast explores if Andruw Monasterio’s versatility and effectiveness against lefties might help patch vulnerabilities, and weighs how the infield’s many “what ifs” could define the Red Sox’s 2026 campaign. Will everything click, or will the infield become Boston’s biggest stumbling block?
