Why a Salary Cap Won’t Fix Baseball’s Competitive Balance, Royals in AFL Updates

The Royals are watching October from the couch, which turns out to be a pretty good vantage point. Jacob Milham and Jeremy Greco use the postseason bracket as a case study in what actually wins in baseball, and the answer is less about payroll than the cap debate wants it to be.

MLB’s latest labor proposal gives them plenty to chew on: a 154-game season, a best-of-seven division series, extra off days, and a system that lets the top seed pick its Wild Card opponent. Jeremy takes on the salary cap head-on, arguing it cannot fix competitive balance by itself because the real issue is how teams choose to spend. The Guardians, Rays, Brewers, and Dodgers become the proof, with starting pitching depth and bullpen usage deciding who has enough arms to survive.

Then it comes home. Jeremy lays out the thinking behind his J. J. Picollo evaluation and lands on a conclusion that may surprise you: the front office is not necessarily the problem. The bigger question is resources, and what the Brewers’ habit of extending young players early has bought them. There is also a stop at the Ronald Acuña Jr. social media frenzy (a trade is far less likely than fans hope), plus a look at Angeibel Gomez and Brooks Bryan, who are turning heads in the Arizona Fall League.

If you want the version of October that comes with front office math, this one is for you. Give it a listen, then tell us whether a cap would have helped Kansas City.
