Australia's famous World Cup squad of 2006 was lauded as the nation's 'golden generation'. A successful campaign saw a rise in interest and popularity in the sport and it was around this time that the A-League was incorporated, with an agenda to create a competitive brand of club football to rival that of China and Japan and build on the success of the World Cup. 15 years on however, and although there is some growth in the domestic league, it is not to the extent that was anticipated, along with that, the national team has struggled to harbour the same calibre of world class places as the 2006 squad, but why is this the case?
