John Shannon opens with hockey insider Scott Burnside to break down the fallout from July 1st free agency, digging into the biggest moves of the period — Nick Paul heading from Tampa to Toronto, Darnell Nurse landing in San Jose, and Sergei Bobrovsky joining the Maple Leafs.
They debate whether these additions make the Atlantic Division even more competitive, question whether Tampa can rebound after losing to Montreal, and examine Toronto's playoff ceiling under new GM John Chayka. Out west, they assess whether San Jose's additions of Jacob Trouba and Darnell Nurse are enough to make them a genuine threat, and whether Anaheim's aging roster will hold them back, while also touching on Zach Werenski's uncertain situation in Columbus and Jason Robertson's murky future in Dallas.
Shannon then sits down with Doug Armstrong, now President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, as he reflects on his transition out of the GM chair and his plans to mentor new general manager Alex Steen while staying out of his way.
Armstrong looks back on his final weeks as GM, a flurry of activity that saw him stockpile four first-round picks, addresses the trades of Jordan Kyrou and Mason McTavish directly, and tackles the perennial challenge of attracting free agents to St. Louis before wrapping on a personal note about adjusting to life in his new role.
