Please Complete The Listener Survey HereEver wondered why you can execute a new swing change perfectly on the driving range, but struggle to reproduce it on the golf course?
In this week's Wednesday Wisdom, I revisit a concept from Hank Haney's book The Big Miss, where he discusses the different stages of transferring a new skill from practice into competition.
From the driving range to practice rounds, tournament golf and eventually major championships, each step brings a new level of pressure and a potential drop in how consistently you can execute that skill. We also touch on the importance of fact-checking AI. When I asked ChatGPT about Haney's concept, it gave me seven stages, despite my recollection being five and another version suggesting four. A timely reminder that AI can be a fantastic resource, but you shouldn't automatically assume everything it tells you is correct. The big takeaway? Just because you can do it on the range doesn't mean you've mastered it. True skill development is about learning to transfer that technique into increasingly challenging environments, until it becomes reliable when it matters most.
A great reminder for golfers, parents and coaches to be patient with the learning process and understand that improvement isn't always immediately reflected on the scorecard.
As mentioned in my podcasts, I do offer training programs to help you get better at your practice outside of your lessons with your coach!
