Alberto Contador started stage 15 of the 2009 Tour de France almost level with Astana teammate Lance Armstrong in the general classification. The stage ended with the mountain top finish up Verbier, with an 8.5km climb averaging 7.5% gradient. Alberto Contador attacked a small group of the Schleck brothers and Lance Armstrong with 5.7km to go, to set a time of 20:55 up Verbier. Measured by VAM, this was (and remains) the highest level climbing performance in Tour de France history and sealed the 2009 Tour de France for Alberto Contador.
