The stage ended with the mountain top finish up Verbier, with an 8.5km climb averaging 7.5% gradient. Alberto Contador attacked a small group of the Schleck brothers and Lance Armstrong with 5.7km to go, to set a time of 20:55 up Verbier. Measured by VAM, this was (and remains) the highest level climbing performance in Tour de France history and sealed the 2009 Tour de France for Alberto Contador.
