One of the most anticipated National Championships road races in the history of cycling, the Slovenian National Championships Road Race for 2020 took place on the weekend. A historic edition given that it is the first UCI accredited race to take place since the suspension of the season following the pandemic. It was also a very interesting edition because the course finished on a mountain top finish and two of the best climbers in the world, Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar would be competing. It was a fairly uninteresting race prior to the climb, with Bahrain Mclaren predictably getting a rider (Tratnik) into the breakaway, however Luka Mezgec (working for Roglic despite being on Mitchelton) and Jan Polanc (working for UAE teammate Pogacar) worked really hard to keep the breakaway in check.

At the start of the climb the live stream from the broadcaster really started to struggle in the weather and the remote mountain region so it is difficult to know exactly went down on the climb. It seems that Roglic attacked early, got caught by Pogacar and then attacked again somewhere in the last kilometre to put 10 seconds into Pogacar and claim his first Slovenian national championships title.
