The Cincinnati Reds return to Great American Ball Park on Friday night for a highly anticipated series opener against the Atlanta Braves, one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball entering the weekend. The matchup features two clubs heading in different directions over the last month, but both teams believe they are positioned to make noise in the National League playoff race.
The Braves arrive in Cincinnati with the best record in baseball at 38-19 and have quickly reestablished themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the sport after a disappointing 2025 season that saw Atlanta finish with 86 losses. Through 57 games, the Braves have already won 15 series this season, the second-most in franchise history at this point in a year. Their offense has been especially dangerous, leading Major League Baseball in both RBIs and total hits.
Atlanta is coming off an emphatic 10-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, a game that showcased just how explosive their lineup can be. Ronald Acuña Jr. delivered a grand slam while Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies also homered in the win. The Braves have now recorded five games with double-digit runs already this season and continue to apply pressure offensively from top to bottom in the lineup.
The Reds, meanwhile, are looking to continue building momentum after a difficult stretch earlier in May. Cincinnati has won five of its last seven games and is beginning to stabilize after dropping 13 of 17 games during a rough patch that threatened to derail the season. Terry Francona’s club now gets an opportunity to test itself against one of baseball’s elite teams in front of the home crowd.
Cincinnati has struggled historically against Atlanta at Great American Ball Park in recent years, with the Reds searching for their first home series win over the Braves since April 2019. However, the Reds have played improved baseball recently thanks to better pitching performances and more consistent offensive production throughout the lineup.
Friday’s pitching matchup features Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes against Reds veteran Chris Paddack. Holmes enters the game with a 3-2 record and a 3.78 ERA over 10 starts this season. He is coming off one of his best outings of the year despite taking a tough loss against Washington after striking out 10 batters over five innings. Holmes has shown swing-and-miss stuff throughout the season and gives the Braves another reliable arm in an already strong rotation.
While Holmes has pitched effectively overall, the Reds have seen some success against him in limited action. In four career appearances against Cincinnati, Holmes owns a 5.14 ERA and is still searching for his first win against the Reds.
For Cincinnati, Paddack continues searching for his first victory of the season. The 30-year-old right-hander was released by the Miami Marlins earlier this month before joining the Reds, and while his overall numbers remain rough, there have been encouraging signs in his first two starts with Cincinnati. Paddack has posted a 4.50 ERA since arriving and appears to be gradually settling into his new environment.
The veteran pitcher understands the pressure surrounding his 0-6 record but has remained confident in his ability to turn things around. Paddack has also enjoyed success against Atlanta throughout his career, going 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in five appearances against the Braves.
For the Reds to pull off a series-opening win, they will likely need Paddack to keep Atlanta’s powerful offense under control while Cincinnati’s lineup capitalizes on scoring opportunities early. The Braves continue to look like one of the favorites in the National League, but the Reds have shown signs recently that they may be ready to play their best baseball of the season.
