A Gatorade bath has come to symbolize a championship season in college football, but the emperor of sports drinks had humble beginnings. Sixty years ago, at the University of Florida, a team of researchers was asked to solve a dehydration problem which caused Gator football players to go to the hospital after practices and games. After performing experiments on the freshman squad, and some trial and error with its taste, Dr. Robert Cade’s team invented a concoction that would become Gatorade. Soon enough, the Gators had a competitive advantage.
