The Cincinnati Reds will look to secure a huge series victory on Sunday afternoon when they wrap up their weekend set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. After an impressive 10-2 win on Saturday, the Reds have a chance to win a series in the Bronx for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Reds enter Sunday’s matchup at 36-39 on the season and are searching for momentum as they continue to battle through the absence of superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who remains sidelined with a strained right hamstring. Cincinnati has gone 6-11 without De La Cruz in the lineup, but Saturday’s offensive explosion was a reminder of just how dangerous this team can be when everything clicks offensively.

Leading the way once again for Cincinnati has been rookie sensation Sal Stewart, who is quickly establishing himself as one of the most productive young hitters in Major League Baseball. Stewart is coming off one of the biggest performances of his young career after driving in six runs in Saturday’s victory. The 22-year-old delivered a two-run double, a sacrifice fly, and later cleared the bases with another huge double.

Stewart now has 53 RBIs on the season, which leads all MLB rookies, and he has driven in 11 runs over his last five games. Reds manager Terry Francona has consistently praised Stewart’s ability to come through in big situations, and his production has become increasingly important with De La Cruz out of the lineup.

Saturday’s win featured one of Cincinnati’s best offensive performances of the season. The Reds tied a season-high with 15 hits and scored 10 runs for only the fourth time all year. Spencer Steer added a massive three-run home run, while rookie infielder Edwin Arroyo continued his strong stretch with a four-hit performance.

On the mound, Cincinnati will turn to one of the hottest pitchers in baseball in Chase Burns. Burns enters Sunday with an outstanding 8-1 record and a sparkling 2.01 ERA. The rookie right-hander has been dominant recently, going 7-0 with a 1.68 ERA over his last 11 starts.

Burns has posted four scoreless outings during that stretch, including a dominant performance against the New York Mets earlier this week when he threw five shutout innings while striking out seven. The hard-throwing right-hander threw 100 pitches in that outing, showing once again why he has quickly become a key piece of Cincinnati’s rotation.

Interestingly, Burns made his Major League debut against the Yankees last season on June 24, 2025. In that start, he allowed three runs over five innings while striking out eight hitters.

The Yankees enter Sunday at 46-29 and will hand the ball to rookie right-hander Elmer Rodriguez, who is making his return to the big leagues. Rodriguez has appeared in three games for New York this season, posting a 4.15 ERA. He has spent most of the year at Triple-A, where he has gone 3-3 with a solid 3.00 ERA across 10 starts.

New York is coming off its most lopsided loss of the season after struggling badly with runners in scoring position on Saturday, finishing 0-for-13 in those opportunities. The Yankees have gone 10-6 since losing Aaron Judge to injury and are expected to activate catcher Austin Wells ahead of Sunday’s game.

With Chase Burns on the mound, Sal Stewart swinging a hot bat, and a chance to win a statement series in New York, Sunday presents a massive opportunity for the Cincinnati Reds as they continue pushing to climb back into the National League playoff race.
