It was the closest finish in modern Olympic history: US sprint star Noah Lyles won the gold medal in the 100m final by just five thousandths of a second ahead of his rival Kishane Thompson from Jamaica. It took 28 seconds for Noah Lyles to celebrate. But then his name appeared on the scoreboard at the Stade de France and there was no stopping the 27-year-old.
Lyles was originally a gymnast and started athletics at the age of 12 but he didn't have it easy. The sprinter developed asthma at an early age. A tonsillectomy, his mother's support, and a change in diet finally enabled him to attend public school. But even here, the young Lyles had to struggle. He had trouble concentrating and was diagnosed with ADHD. He also has a reading and spelling disorder. He was often teased by his classmates. So sport became his outlet.
