University of Houston strength and conditioning coach Kurt Hester often tests the will of his players, but in 2025, it is he who faces the ultimate challenge. After a fluke rib injury brought him to the hospital for an X-ray, doctors discovered masses on two of his vital organs. Hester was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. He says one oncologist told him to make peace with his family and call hospice. Over six months later, he has lost his hair and almost 50 pounds, but not his indomitable spirit.
