Cincinnati Opens 2026 Season Against Boston College at Nippert Stadium

The Cincinnati Bearcats will begin a pivotal 2026 season Saturday afternoon when Boston College visits Nippert Stadium for a nationally televised matchup on FOX.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Cincinnati is asking fans to wear white for the season opener, which will mark Boston College’s first trip to Nippert Stadium since 1996. The all-time series is tied 4-4, with Cincinnati winning the most recent meeting 38-6 in the Birmingham Bowl following the 2019 season.

Both programs enter the opener with plenty to prove.

Cincinnati finished 7-6 last season, including a 5-4 record in Big 12 play, but ended the year with five consecutive losses. The season concluded with a 35-13 loss to Navy in the Liberty Bowl. Scott Satterfield now enters his fourth year leading the Bearcats with a roster that looks significantly different from last season.

The biggest change comes at quarterback, where JC French IV is expected to replace Brendan Sorsby. French brings starting experience and dual-threat ability, but Saturday will provide the first real indication of how quickly he has taken command of Cincinnati’s rebuilt offense.

French will have several new weapons around him, including wide receiver Malachi Henry. The Central Arkansas transfer caught 69 passes for 900 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and is expected to become one of Cincinnati’s primary playmakers. Oklahoma transfer JV Gibson could provide another downfield threat.

The Bearcats also believe they have considerable depth at running back. Stanford transfer Cole Tabb made an impression during preseason camp, including an estimated 70-yard run in Cincinnati’s final scrimmage. The Bearcats are expected to rotate multiple backs rather than relying entirely on one featured runner.

Boston College is attempting to recover from a disastrous 2-10 season in which the Eagles lost 10 consecutive games before beating Syracuse in their finale. Bill O’Brien responded by overhauling the roster, adding 27 players through the transfer portal and making several changes to his coaching staff. Former UCF defensive coordinator Ted Roof was hired to repair a unit that allowed an ACC-worst 467.3 yards per conference game last season.

Like Cincinnati, Boston College will feature a new starting quarterback. Mason McKenzie arrives from Division II Saginaw Valley State after throwing for more than 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns over three seasons. McKenzie is also dangerous as a runner, giving Cincinnati’s defense another responsibility to account for in the opener.

The most proven player in Boston College’s offense may be Liberty transfer Evan Dickens. The running back rushed for 1,339 yards and 16 touchdowns on 229 carries last season. Slowing down Dickens while keeping McKenzie contained could be the biggest challenge for a Cincinnati defense replacing several major contributors.

That matchup could determine the game. If Boston College consistently creates manageable third downs with its rushing attack, O’Brien will be able to protect his inexperienced quarterback and control the tempo. Cincinnati must win early downs, force McKenzie into obvious passing situations and generate pressure without allowing him to escape the pocket.

Offensively, the Bearcats need French to play efficiently and avoid giving Boston College short fields. Establishing the running game should help settle Cincinnati’s new quarterback while creating opportunities for Henry and Gibson downfield.

Saturday represents more than a routine season opener. Cincinnati has an opportunity to begin the year with a Power Four victory before facing Western Carolina and Miami University. With a difficult Big 12 schedule awaiting the Bearcats, protecting home field against a rebuilding Boston College team feels especially important.

Cincinnati has more stability, home-field advantage and the deeper collection of skill players. But with new quarterbacks leading both offenses, turnovers and special teams could quickly erase any perceived advantage. The Bearcats should be favored, but they will need to earn it against an opponent determined to prove last season was an aberration.
