The Refs Got Wemby's Lob Call Wrong — Here's Why the Basket Shouldn't Have Counted

Two goaltending calls in the Spurs-Thunder game were ruled incorrectly, and I want to walk through exactly why.
First, the SGA foul on Wemby's lob. The foul happened before Wemby's hand ever reached the ball. That means the basket should not have counted. It was a foul, yes, but not a shooting foul, and the bucket was incorrectly awarded.
Second, the play where Wemby touched the ball in the cylinder. That should have been called offensive basket interference. It wasn't.
Combo and Chip also helped me think through the edge cases here, like what actually happens when a defender puts a hand through the rim, and when a tip-in attempt on the way down is protected as goaltending even outside the cylinder.
The rulebook is specific on all of this. The refs struggled with basket interference and goaltending all night. #shorts
