The 2006 Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne and Australia's greatest ever middle distance runner Craig Mottram was lining up in front of an 80,000 strong crowd at the MCG for the 5000m final. He was competing against the likes of Ben Limo and Augustine Choge from Kenya, with Limo being the reigning 5000m World Champion (the race in Helsinki where Mottram won bronze), as well as Moses Kipsiro from Uganda and Mo Farah from Great Britain. The race had a very high pace, with Choge and Limo pushing the tempo very hard from the outset, which put a lot of the other runners in difficulty. Mottram sat on the Kenyan train until 2.5 laps to go, when he kicked ahead of Choge, who was the only other runner able to remain with him. After a 55 second third to last lap, the rest of the field was on splinters, with a head to head battle between Choge and Mottram remaining. Eventually Choge proved the strongest, coming around Mottram with 200m to go and claiming the Commonwealth Games gold medal in the 5000m for Kenya, after a brilliant team performance including Limo and Ebuya. His time was 12:56 with Mottram running a 12:58, some of the fastest times recorded in a 5000m final in history and Mottram's time being one of the best performances by a Western athlete in 5000m history (to this day).
