“For the First Time This Season, We Showed to Be a Team” | De Zerbi | Man Utd 1-1 Spurs

Roberto De Zerbi says he kissed Rodrigo Bentancur after his red card at Old Trafford and thanked him. The sending off was a mistake, he says, but down to ten men Spurs played with more courage and energy than they have in a long time, and for the first time this season “we showed to be a team.” He also reveals why he gave Dominic Solanke the captain’s armband after a week of criticism: “Who is the striker of Tottenham? Solanke is not good enough. It’s not true. Maybe he’s the best striker for us.”

De Zerbi explains what Solanke’s goal showed compared with the Villa game, why Spurs are “a great group of players, but not a team yet”, what he wants from Savio (“he has to make the switch”), and how you demand character from players without crossing the line. Asked whether this could be a turning point, he won’t go there: Coventry at home is next, and “we can’t accept to stay in that situation.”
