How a Custom Wedge Fitting Can Improve Your Short Game | Titleist

Can a custom wedge fitting improve your short game? Mike Shade from @chasingscratch joins Titleist fitting expert Hunter Brown to address one of the clearest weaknesses in his game: wedge shots from roughly 80 to 110 yards.

Using launch monitor data and comparing Vokey Design SM10 and SM11 wedges, JJ tests how different combinations of loft, bounce, grind and shaft affect Mike’s contact, launch and spin.

Hunter breaks the fitting process into three key parts: contact, flight and spin. As Mike moves through different setups, the launch monitor shows how each equipment change affects his strike and ball flight. The fitting progresses from controlled distance shots to partial swings, greenside shots and bunker play, helping Hunter determine which setup best matches Mike’s delivery and typical course conditions.

The biggest improvement comes in Mike’s sand wedge setup, where added bounce and a wider sole produce more consistent contact from the turf and greater forgiveness from the bunker. The session demonstrates why wedge fitting goes beyond selecting lofts and focuses on matching each club to the golfer’s delivery, course conditions and most important scoring shots.
