The NHL season is almost here, and while the usual Stanley Cup favorites dominate the odds board, there are a few teams flying under the radar that could make a serious playoff run.
In this Daily Faceoff segment, we take a closer look at two sleeper Stanley Cup contenders for the 2026-27 NHL season: the Washington Capitals and Utah Mammoth.
Washington enters the season with the eighth-best Stanley Cup odds at 15-1, but there are plenty of reasons to believe the Capitals could be a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference. Their roster checks a lot of boxes, including Logan Thompson in goal, a deep defense corps and a forward group that added major talent this offseason.
The Capitals added Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner, joining a lineup that already features Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois and other players capable of producing 20-plus goals. Could Washington take advantage of a weaker Metropolitan Division and turn another strong regular season into a deep Stanley Cup playoff run?
Out West, Utah Mammoth could be one of the NHL's most intriguing breakout teams. Despite being listed at 30-1 to win the Stanley Cup, Utah had an impressive offseason and has a young core that could take a major step forward.
The Mammoth added veteran players including Anders Lee and Vladislav Namestnikov, acquired goaltender Sebastian Cossa, and have a talented group featuring Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther. With a solid blue line and a potentially high-ceiling goaltending tandem, could Utah emerge as a surprise playoff team and dangerous postseason matchup?
