Build ball control, awareness and confidence on the ball with Grid Dribbling, a simple youth soccer dribbling drill that only needs players, balls and four cones. Former FC Cincinnati midfielder Corben Bone takes you through it.
In this FC Cincinnati Soccer Drills episode, presented by Penn Station East Coast Subs, Corben, FC Cincinnati's Director of Soccer in the Community, runs Grid Dribbling at TQL Stadium. Every player dribbles inside a 20x20 grid. When the coach blows the whistle, players react with an action, and each round adds a harder progression. It's easy to set up, works for all ages and keeps every player on the ball.
⚽ EQUIPMENT
• 4 cones (to make a 20x20 grid)
• Soccer balls (1 per player)
📋 HOW TO PLAY
Players dribble around the grid. On the whistle, they do the action for that round:
1. Sole stop: Stop the ball with the sole of your foot and hold until the next whistle.
2. Toe touches: Stop the ball, do 5 quick toe touches, then dribble away right away.
3. Skill move: Show a creative move like a scissors, L-turn, croqueta, rainbow or Maradona.
4. Ball swap: Stop your ball, leave it and find a new one.
🎯 COACHING POINTS
• Ball control: Keep close control while you move and react to the whistle.
• Awareness: Keep your head up to find open space and a new ball.
• Urgency and creativity: React fast and have fun with your skill moves.
