Who is Ethan Shuley? If you didn't know his name before the Osaka Marathon, you weren't alone. But his 2:07:14 just made him the 7th-fastest American marathoner of all time on a record-eligible course.

He certainly does not have your typical marathon success story. Ethan was a high school standout in Kentucky who raced against Yared Nuguse, but chronic Achilles injuries derailed his college career at BYU. After running just ONE race in a BYU uniform and battling injuries for years, he quit the team entirely and walked away from competitive running.

Fast forward: He's living in Japan for work and film school, attempting 100-mile ultramarathons, training completely solo, self-coaching off Strava workouts, and gradually building back his fitness. Then came the breakthrough nobody saw coming: 2:20 at Nara, 2:18 at Nagano, 2:11 at Kobe, and finally 2:07:14 at Osaka — all while unsponsored, a period while self-coached, and running 150-mile weeks on six days.

In this CITIUS MAG Podcast interview, Ethan breaks down:
– Why he quit BYU's track team and walked away from running
– His Mormon mission to Ukraine and how it changed his perspective
– Moving to Japan, attempting ultras, and getting destroyed by 60-year-old Japanese trail runners
– The gradual progression from trail races to breaking 15:00 in the 5K for the first time in his life
– Training solo in Kobe, learning Japanese marathon culture, and racing alongside Kenyan elites
– How he went from 2:20 to 2:07 in just over a year
– His strength training, fueling adjustments, and managing constant nagging injuries
– The mental fortitude required to push through cramping and solo racing in Japan
–Whether the 2028 US Olympic Marathon Trials are on his radar

This is one of the most unlikely marathon breakthroughs in recent American history, and it's a reminder that there's no single path to greatness in distance running.
