The football that Roberto De Zerbi likes to implement at his clubs has a lot of similarities with the football Pep Guardiola likes to implement.
The problem with trying to imitate Guardiola’s style is that you need an incredibly high level of technical and physical players in your squad in order to play this way. So coaches started to take Pep’s learnings and adapt them; one coach was De Zerbi.
He may have adapted Guardiola’s methods, but he hasn’t perfected them…
Written by Jon Mackenzie, illustrated by Philippe Fenner.
This is taken from The Spectre of Pep: How Guardiola Haunts Modern Football by Jon Mackenzie. This was adapted for video, so is much shorter than the original, which contains far more detail and is worth reading! You can find a link to the book in the description.
