Michigan beat Oklahoma 17-10 in Ann Arbor, and the defense is the only reason it happened. Jyaire Hill's fourth-quarter interception and 24-yard return to the Oklahoma 6 set up Jordan Marshall's go-ahead touchdown, and John Mateer had his worst outing in over a year. But for the second straight week, the offensive line couldn't run block or pass protect — and Bryce Underwood carrying it 18 times for 87 yards is not a plan you survive with against Iowa, Penn State, Oregon and Ohio State.
Both teams finished under 300 total yards. Both under 200 passing. Both under 160 rushing. This game came down to one play, and Michigan made it.
Where I land: if this offense can be even average, this defense is good enough to win a lot of games. Right now it isn't average. UTEP is the tune-up. Iowa is the answer.
